Proximity keys let you unlock and start the vehicle with the key still in your pocket. They are convenient, they are expensive to replace, and the programming is the most access-controlled work in automotive locksmithing — which is why a lot of shops will not attempt it.

How proximity systems work
The vehicle transmits a low-frequency signal from antennas placed around the car. When the key enters that field it wakes, authenticates, and replies over UHF. The vehicle then knows the key is present, and where it is — inside the cabin or outside — which is how it decides whether to allow starting.
This is a considerably more complex exchange than a transponder key, and it is why programming requires equipment that can talk to the vehicle's security module through an authenticated channel.
When the fob battery dies
Almost every push-to-start vehicle has a backup method, and it is worth knowing yours before you need it. Most have a mechanical emergency blade hidden inside the fob that opens the driver's door, and a designated spot — often the start button itself, a marked pad on the steering column, or a slot in the centre console — where holding the dead fob allows a start via the transponder chip inside it.
The location is in your owner's manual and it takes two minutes to look up now. Finding out in a parking garage in February is a worse time.
Relay theft and how to reduce the risk
Proximity keys have a known vulnerability. Thieves use a pair of relay devices to extend the signal from a key inside your house out to the vehicle on the driveway, and the car believes the key is present. It is a real and well-documented method, and it has been a significant factor in vehicle theft in the GTA.
The practical mitigations are straightforward. Keep keys in a signal-blocking pouch or a metal container, and away from the front door — the relay needs to reach the key, and distance and shielding both defeat it. Many vehicles also have a motion-sensing sleep mode that disables the key after a period without movement; check whether yours does and enable it. A steering wheel lock is visible, crude and genuinely effective as a deterrent, and an OBD port lock blocks a separate attack route where a new key is programmed through the diagnostic port.

What replacement involves
The fob blank itself is the major cost on a smart key, and for recent luxury vehicles it is substantial. Programming requires authenticated access, and many makes impose a security wait period — a delay built into the vehicle, typically ten to sixty minutes, during which nothing can be done but wait. That is manufacturer-imposed and nobody can shorten it.
Some vehicles cap the number of keys that can be registered and require erasing all existing keys to add a new one. Bring every key you want to keep.
