Pick-, drill- and bump-resistant cylinders on patented restricted keyways, for doors where a standard cylinder is not adequate.

What happens when you call

  1. You call, text or leave your number

You talk to a locksmith, not a call centre — 7 days a week.

  2. You get the price first

We tell you what it costs before anyone comes out. You decide. No surprises on the invoice.

  3. We come and fix it

A technician arrives with the parts to finish the job, backed by 30 years in the trade.

A conventional pin-tumbler cylinder is a reasonable deterrent against a casual attempt and very little obstacle to anyone who has spent an afternoon learning. High-security cylinders address three separate attacks — picking, drilling and key duplication — and the third is usually the one that matters most in practice.

Typical range: $275–$1400 CAD. Ranges are typical for the GTA and depend on the door, the hardware and the time of day. We confirm the price before dispatching.

What makes a cylinder high-security

  • Hardened steel inserts and anti-drill pins that defeat drilling attacks on the shear line
  • Sidebars, rotating pins or secondary locking elements that make picking impractical rather than merely difficult
  • Geometry that resists bumping, where a standard cylinder can be defeated with a cheap bump key in seconds
  • Patented keyways so blanks are not available on the open market and duplication requires documented authorisation
  • Anti-pull and anti-snap construction on euro-profile cylinders, where snapping is the dominant attack method

Key control is the real benefit

Most businesses that install high-security cylinders do it for the picking and drilling resistance and end up valuing the key control more. The everyday problem is not a skilled attacker, it is that six former employees may each have made a copy at a kiosk for two dollars and you have no way to know.

A patented restricted keyway makes duplication traceable and authorised. You hold a card or a documented authority, and copies come only from the dealer holding your system. That converts "we think we have the keys back" into a fact you can actually verify.

Grading and what it means

North American hardware is graded by ANSI/BHMA from Grade 3 (residential) through Grade 2 to Grade 1 (heavy commercial), based on cycle testing and strength. Security cylinders are separately rated under UL 437 and ANSI/BHMA 156.30 for attack resistance.

These are different axes. A Grade 1 lockset is built to survive heavy use; a UL 437 cylinder is built to survive attack. A serious commercial door usually wants both, and the two ratings are specified independently.

Where high-security is and is not worth it

It is worth it on doors protecting inventory, cash, pharmaceuticals, data or controlled substances; on any master key system where key control is the point; and on doors that have already been targeted.

It is not worth it on a door beside a single-glazed window, and we will say so. A high-security cylinder on a door that can be bypassed by breaking glass or by an unreinforced frame is money spent on the strongest link in a weak chain. The honest assessment usually starts with the frame and the strike.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are high-security locks worth the cost?

On the right door, clearly yes — particularly for the key control, which is the benefit most businesses actually use day to day. On the wrong door they are wasted money, and the wrong door is any door where the surrounding construction is the weak point. We assess the whole opening and tell you where the money is best spent, which is sometimes a reinforced strike and frame rather than a better cylinder.

Can a high-security key be copied?

Not at a hardware store or a kiosk — the blanks are patented and not sold on the open market. Copies come from the authorised dealer holding your system, against documented authorisation. That is the entire point: duplication becomes an auditable event rather than an anonymous two-dollar transaction.

Can I keep my existing locks and just upgrade the cylinders?

Very often, yes. Many commercial locksets accept interchangeable cylinders, so the lock body, trim and door prep stay exactly as they are and only the cylinder changes. It is substantially cheaper than replacing complete locksets and it is the first thing we check.

What is lock bumping and does it affect my locks?

Bumping uses a specially cut key struck sharply to jolt the pins past the shear line, and it defeats a large proportion of standard pin-tumbler cylinders quickly and without obvious damage. High-security cylinders are designed against it through sidebars and additional locking elements. If your premises have standard cylinders on doors that matter, this is a genuine consideration rather than a sales line.
